About KeaWare...

Years ago, I needed a little application to design and print CD labels. There weren't many choices out there for the Mac, so I wrote my own. I decided to release it as shareware in case other people had the same need.

That's the way it stood for many years. I always wanted to improve on the 1.0 version of CD Labeler, but time constraints always seemed to get in the way.

Then in the last few months, I got bitten by the Mac bug again, but this time I had the time to dive into it. Instead of using REALbasic, the development software I used to write the original CD Labeler, I learned how to write software using Apple's tools. I expected this would result in more polished apps.

I wanted to have a little company for any future software offerings, so I chose the name KeaWare and created this web site. What does the name mean, you may ask? The kea is a parrot native to New Zealand, plus ware, as in software.

From Wikipedia:

Kea are legendary for their intelligence and curiosity...

Their curiosity leads them to peck and carry away unguarded items of clothing or to pry apart rubber parts of cars—to the entertainment and annoyance of human observers. They are often described as "cheeky".

Sounded like a fun mascot to me! That, combined with my admiration of the natural beauty of New Zealand, convinced me on the name question. I hired the immensely talented Pete Joison to illustrate the logo for me.

So that's the scoop. I hope I can produce software that people can use and enjoy using. Who knows, I might even get around to writing CD Labeler 2.0 one day!
